Remembrances from The Help – Book, Movie & Life Reflections

Copyright by Shandra Lee White Harris :

“Why are you here? she said in a stage whisper”…”Once I told the truth about how it felt to be me, I was free.” …patiently, cautiously explaining to a child who still does not understand, the hatred, anger and fear of the people on the screen caught in the chaos of fighting for their rights. Her face or shape have no remembrance for me, but her patience, gentleness and kindness do….There have been many defining moments in my Life where sitting with, owning & speaking the Truth is the most empowering Gift we can give ourselves and others….

Out front, waiting. Wondering. My Companion said “Leave or stay-either is right~but since we’re here why don’t we go on in.” The previews were rolling  so quickly I slipped into a seat in front where I would spot my friends should they arrive. As the theater gradually filled, 3 mature women claimed the seats next to me.  Sometime later when my first gasp escaped, they turned quizzically, whispering in unison “haven’t you read the book?” In other words- why are you here?

Remembrances streamed across my own screen…

A small girl lying on the floor under the creaky wooden ironing board as the ‘colored girl’ ironed clothes . We watched grainy BW images. She patiently, cautiously explaining to a child who still does not understand, the hatred, anger and fear of the people on the screen caught in the chaos of fighting for their rights. Her face or shape have no remembrance for me, but her patience, gentleness and kindness do….

Years later, wishing to visit another well loved woman of the same gentle nature, and dark color, only to discover it was not proper. She was a maid. She lived on the “other side of the tracks”…

Here. Now. In this dark theater. Today.

Whilst I prefer to think I’m mostly a balanced mixture of Aibieleen, Skeeter, and Minny-

I found myself too often in too many of the other characters. Anyone?

As the movie drew to a close I found myself thinking this is fine but “why am I here?”…Then spoke the :mother, aunts, cousin, friends, niece, sisters: … “Courage sometimes skips a generation. Thank you for bringing it back to our family.”

Once I told the truth about how it felt to be me, I was free.
