Shandra Lee. With Heart Wide Open. A Miracle In The Making.

This will be that last one of the days of the week posts . Promise. (maybe)  🙂

It’s true that today I am VERY thankful (Just click on the tags at the bottom of this post and see how  often Gratitude or Family or Faith are the topic) for Gods favor, VERY grateful. Have you heard? This is the place of a Highly Favored Empty Nester.

Knowing that at any moment the feelings of this weeks Great Joy could crumble into tears  and back again, keeps me from taking this season lightly or for granted. Plenty of  successful women,  men and couples fall apart without a “plan” or because of regrets. Too many young adults fall apart in this season, needlessly crash and burn. I’ve also seen loads of friends gracefully and with great glee embrace and flourish in this season of well-earned fun.

Search Google or Goodread and scads of titles surface for the empty nest generation and our brood. How Tos, Do Nots , Syndromes and everything in between. So in the midst of all this cultural and conventional research to the contrary, why do I feel so great about this?  We have a plan. We follow God’s Wisdom and advice.

The previous several weeks when it really became evident that this next step of Faith and adventure was a go, Son and I chatted, often. Sharing fears , hopes and dreams it became evident that any popcorn fear I had was based on my failures, flounderings and struggles as a young adult a kazillion years ago.

The difference? God. The steps of a man are established by the LORD, when he delights in his way. Psalm 37:23 ESV

Andrew is stepping out after three intense years of pressing into, and seeking after God’s Heart. He’s been surrounded by faithful, protective, accountability from a community of Christ Followers who care for and believe in him. A community  he has allowed to speak into is Life.  He’s going to the same. Win~Win for this mother’s heart and this young adults next steps.

This season a Badge of Honor for a job well done. Both sons on their own, courageous, determined.  As a parent at any age or stage this IS what we’re called to do. Prepare them well and let them go. Thus, Thankful indeed. 🙂

Next steps you ask? He is in Redding, CA with Pastor friends where their growing team will prayerfully consider the next steps, with the major purpose to consider  being part of a Church plant in Reno, in June.

Myself? Travel,  classes, writing,  learning, fun, adventure…well just check back … that’s another story.

Oh, and by the way,  there’s an entire industry for the “Boomerang Nest “. 😉

Thanks for your questions, concerns and prayers. They really are most welcome.

Do you have advice? Resources?or a story about your own experience? Please, share your journey and advice. Absolutely do tell. We love to hear from you. Learning from and with each other is the best.

  1. Gretchen, you and Chris will have a wonderful time during the season of “grown children” because you’re preparing well, now. Lizzie and Jack have parents who invest in the family, their marriage and those TwoCuties know their worth in healthy balanced ways. Enjoy!
Thanks so much for taking time to stop by Dad and Gretchen!

Reader family I’d like to share this link with you about my Amazing Niece Gretchen Haber Bennett and her comittment for the Children of the State of Oregon: ~Gretchen Bennett will leave Liberty House accepting new position … via @Salem_Statesman @shandra_lee

  2. Thank you for sharing such a thoughtful piece. I wonder about what the empty nest stage will be like someday and appreciate this sharing!
